Policing Bonfire 2020

Alert message sent 08/11/2020 01:30:00

Information sent on behalf of Leicestershire Police

Good morning to you.

I thought I would give you an update regarding our bonfire operation as well as policing lockdown 2. Following on from Halloween, you told us that you want us to deal with anti-social behaviour (ASB) over this period. We know for almost all the previous calls regarding ASB and associated problems with fireworks creates additional demand on our teams.

As with all years, our leadership team wanted to tackle the problems you raised, but also ensure continuity with our normal demand. Our new model of policing where all teams are based locally have allowed for additional flexibility to move staff around and put more people on the ground during these events. We have made sure all beats are supported by their local PCSO’s and PC’s over this period, as well as boosting numbers on our neighbourhood patrol officer teams (NPO).

This meant from Thursday 5th November until Sunday 8th November we had many additional staff on duty to deal with the demand. Obviously, events nationally changed bonfire. We quickly adapted our plans to ensure we dealt with both spontaneous ASB, fireworks as well as patrolling the areas that you have highlighted and reported COVID breaches.

With regards to ASB, the number of incidents was really low. There have been spontaneous incidents across the policing area, but nothing a little policing presence didn’t solve. Our patrols navigated across the area, you can see the updates on the facebook and twitter pages of Market Harborough Police and Oadby and Wigston Police. Some of our new tools internally allow us to be more precise with locations than before, which is helpful when directing patrols. It is really important you report incidents to us so we know where its happening, some of our messages indicate this doesn’t happen, we cannot help if we don’t know. Hopefully you felt the effects of this work and ASB didn’t affect you personally. Our ASB calls sat at 22, which includes COVID, this is for our entire area (almost the south of Leicestershire).

Following on from Bonfire our ASB and COVID operation continues until December. This means we have dedicated officers to attend these incidents. This helps us manage this demand without affecting normal demand.

Our newsletter is just waiting to be sent, there is some fantastic work contained on that. We will also send out a mid-month update regarding your priorities. I hope you and your family stay safe.
