Beggars and the homeless

Alert message sent 07/10/2020 09:42:00

Information sent on behalf of Leicestershire Police

Dear Residents

We are aware that over the last few months there has been an increase of beggars on Belgrave and Melton Road and we would like to provide you with an update as to what we are doing in relation to this. First of all we would like to inform you that the beggars you are seeing are not homeless as Leicester City Council arranged for them all to have accommodation at the start of the Covid lockdown and they are currently receiving three meals a day and have a roof over their heads. Although this was initially seen as a short term solution, the homeless team are currently looking at providing permanent accommodation for all those that require this.

We understand how giving and kind this community is and that people wish to help those that they see begging but we are asking for you not to provide them with money as unfortunately this can go towards their drug habbits and drinking problems and could actually make them more vulnerable. Help is being provided to all of those people that require it and we ask that if you do want to help then look at local charities in the area that work with the homeless people and see what they need.

We will continue to work with the council and the beggars to ensure all their welfare needs are met.

Thank you for reading this

Kind Regards

The Belgrave Neighbourhood Team
