Nanpantan Road and Quarry Access

Alert message sent 01/06/2020 02:39:00

Information sent on behalf of Leicestershire Police

Good morning,

The Charnwood 63 Beat Team have been working with partners to resolve an issue around people accessing the disused Quarry (former Hanson Aggregates Site) that is now owned by BIFFA. And consequentially parking on Nanpantan Road in order to access the site.

The access to this site is a civil trespass matter. Entering onto private land owned by BIFFA is a matter that BIFFA may seek to prosecute those involved for. Nobody should be accessing their site without authority or permission. This is clearly delineated by fencing around the site.
BIFFA, in a response to helping prevent people accessing the quarry, have now increased their security presence throughout the day and are repairing and securing the fences that surround the Quarry.

Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Services have been sending messages out to warn people about the dangers of diving into the Quarry. This has been circulated on Twitter and Facebook pages, re-shared by Leicestershire Police on our own social media platforms as well.

Local Officers have put their own posts out asking that people stay away from the quarry & have attended the location and supported BIFFA's security team to warn visitors away. We have also asked those we have seen to not to park on Nanpantan Road.

At this time we cannot ticket those vehicle parked at the location, nor take steps to remove the vehicles parked on the verges and out of the road. But this is something that we are pursuing with our colleagues in Traffic Management and the Highways Agency. And whilst longer term measures are being sought to prevent vehicles stopping here shorter term measures have been requested and I shall continue to push for a solution to be introduced as soon as possible.

I am now aware that there has been a traffic collision on Nanpantan Road, in the area these cars have been parking. This information I have shared with Traffic Management and the Highways Agency.

Until new measures can be introduced I again ask people:

DO NOT go into the disused Quarry between Loughborough/Shepshed. It is a very dangerous site and is private land that you must not enter.

DO NOT park on Nanpantan Road, specifically on the hill leading to the junction with Ingleberry Road. It can obstruct the view of drivers using the roads and, as we have seen, it may contribute to an accident.

If you are using Nanantan Road then please can I ask that you be aware of the road conditions and prepare to stop or slow down around the bend coming down and into Loughborough. The speed of the road at this stretch is the National Speed Limit (60mph) BUT your safety can be increased if you should decrease your speed.

Updates on the progress made with this matter shall be shared as I am able.

Please continue to be careful and considerate of others.

Sgt 2072 Lee Taylor
