Dealing with Rogue Traders

Alert message sent 30/06/2019 18:52:00

Information sent on behalf of Leicestershire Police

Hello
I was approached recently by a member of the public seeking advice regarding an elderly relative who she suspected had been the the victim of a rogue trader offering to do some work on her property where the amount paid exceeded the value of the work carried out.

If you suspect that you or a relative or neighbour have been approached by a rogue trader please report it to Citizens Advice Rogue Trader Consumerline
https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/consumer/get-more-help/report-to-trading-standards/
Telephone: 03454 04 05 06

If you care for an elderly or vulnerable friend or relative please follow the following advice:
  • Discourage them from keeping large amounts of cash in their property, no more than they need on a weekly basis
  • If they have a door chain or bar fitted ensure they know how to use it i.e. only when answering the door, do not leave it on all the time as this could prevent someone getting in in an emergency
  • Better still encourage them to speak to unexpected callers via a window as this is much stronger
  • Keep all doors locked at all times to prevent them being distracted at the front door whilst an accomplice gains access at the rear
  • If someone calls offering to do work, don't be taken in. Always obtain 3 quotes before agreeing to any work.
  • Consider installing CCTV or a camera doorbell that will send alerts to your smart phone so you can see who is calling on them.

Finally if you think distraction burglars have been operating in your area please let the police know by dialling 101 or reporting via the website
 https://www.leics.police.uk/advice/advice-and-information/fa/fraud/personal-fraud/
or you can send a message via Neighbourhood Link although it is not monitored 24/7 so if it's urgent please use 101 or the website.

Stay safe
